Rio 2016 silver medallist Tan Wee Kiong has asked the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to come up with a quick solution after an Olympic qualifier tournament, the German open was cancelled due to Covid-19 concerns.

Currently, Tan and his partner Goh V Shem are ranked No. 14 in the Race To Tokyo rankings and not qualified for the Olympics. Each and every one of the handful of remaining Olympic qualifier tournaments are important for the pair to keep their chances of competing in Tokyo alive.

Regarding the matter, BWF’s media and communications manager Lloyd Green said that currently no decisions on changes regarding qualification had yet been made after the cancellation of the German Open.

“We are working with the IOC (International Olympic Committee) to finalise the Tokyo 2020 qualification system but we understand that additional changes could be needed,” said Green.

The cancellation of the German Open, which was scheduled in the week between the Swiss Open and the All England, has also presented the players with a new problem.

“What do we do in between the Swiss Open and All-England? It’s tough for independent players in terms of finance. We know it’s hard for BWF to make a decision but they really need to react quickly,” Tan told The Star.
