Goh Soon Huat, Lai Shevon Jemie, Lai Pei Jing, Vivian Hoo and Soniia Cheah have appealed to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) for financial support until March. The five players, who represented the top crop of the national team, were axed without warning on Sunday following unsatisfactory performance.

The Swiss Open, the German Open and the All England are scheduled for March. Of these, the Swiss and the German Open carry Olympic qualifying points.

Soniia Cheah is currently qualified for the Olympics while Goh Soon Huat & Lai Shevon Jemie have a good chance for qualifying in the mixed doubles event.

“The European circuit is too crucial for us. We are all still fighting to qualify for the Olympics. We really hope BAM would be kind enough to fund us for these tournaments,” Lai Shevon Jemie, who is currently ranked 10 in the world, told NST.

Kenny Goh, Chairman of BAM’s of Coaching and Training committee said, “We’ll call for a virtual meeting soon to decide on this matter. We’ll give an answer before the Chinese New Year break.”
