2020 All England champion Viktor Axelsen is nominated for the Sports Name of the Year award that will be announced on January 2, 2021. His 2020 All England win was one of the major considerations for the nomination.

Chairman of the judging committee of the Sports Name of the Year 2020, Niels Nygaard said that winning the All England in a superior style and achieving his childhood dream put him among the bests in the world.

“That is why he deserves the nomination of this award. But the victory in Birmingham is not only an unbelievably beautiful and historic victory for Viktor Axelsen, but it is also the culmination of many years of hard work for the coaching staff and the experts around him. You do not win gold alone.”

Axelsen is nominated alongside Pernille Harder, football and the Track national team, Track cycling. He is not new to this award, he won it in 2017 against compatriots like Caroline Wozniacki, tennis.

Axelsen told TV 2 Sport: “As an athlete, it is clearly one of the biggest recognitions you can get, so I am, of course, very proud and honoured to have been nominated. It helps to give me even more blood on the tooth for the future.

“Winning the All England was a childhood dream of mine. All the emotions and the hard work that I have put in is awarded. It has been a very special year, and I will probably always look back on 2020 with fond memories.”
