At a Yonex event in Shanghai on July 9, Lin Dan said that Roger Federer has always been a role model for him.
“He is the best player in tennis and is still determined to achieve more at a relatively older age. He is also a role model for me,” said Lin Dan as reported by Sports Sina.
The 37-year old Swiss maestro, Roger Federer was the runner up losing to Novak Djokovic at the 2019 Wimbledon.
Post match, the interviewer asked, “I think there are 37 year olds around the world thinking how do you do this? How can you still be playing at your best?”
Federer replied, “Well, I hope I give some other people a chance to believe that at 37 it’s not over yet…it’s good and I hope I wish the same for the other 37 year olds.”
It seems Roger Federer’s positive message is what Lin Dan is trying to emulate in his life right now. He did say he will participate in his home National games next year.
Lin Dan has often talked highly of Roger Federer in the past. When Federer won his 18th grand slam at the 2017 Australian Open, Lin Dan wrote, “Congratulations to Federer on the 18th, hope for my own 20th, let’s go.”
Lin Dan says Federer’s ability to sustain his mental strength and his fighting spirit is admirable and that Federer proves that age is just a number.
Lin Dan: “If he can do it, so can I… Federer is really an incredible role model especially to older players.”
