Chinese Taipei pair of Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin recorded their first-ever win over world No. 1s Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Marcus Gideon Fernaldi today in the group stage of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Prior to today’s match, the duo has never won a single game against Sukamuljo and Gideon, let alone a match.

They won the match 21-18, 15-21, 21-17 to qualify for the knockout stage along with the world No. 1s from Group A. Their qualification also means that India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will not be advancing to the knockout stage.

Both Lee/Wang and Rankireddy/Shetty won 2 matches and lost 1 match each in the group stage (Group A). But Lee/Wang got ahead in terms of game difference (games won minus games lost), Lee/Wang with +2 games, while Rankireddy/Shetty with +1 games.

After the match, Wang Chi-Lin told BWF, “We had no pressure and so we played better than yesterday. We lost the first match (against Rankireddy/Shetty) as we were playing too defensively, so we tried to enjoy the match today and get on the attack. It was our best performance in this competition so far.”
