Malaysian legend, three-time men’s singles Olympic silver medallist Lee Chong Wei stepped up to defend Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying from online hate. Expectations were running high on the Rio silver medallists Chan and Goh to perform well in Tokyo, but the duo got knocked out from the tournament after losing both their first two matches in the group stage.
Lee Chong Wei said, “I’ve been dismayed by the number of online comments abusing our badminton players when they lost. As a former teammate, I felt so much for them.
“All I want to say is I know these players. They went to court with only one aim, one goal… No one wants to go into court and lose. These players brought you joy before. Don’t mock and desert them when they lost a game.”
