World champion and world No. 1 Kento Momota has been nominated for the prestigious Laureus Sports Awards.

He has been nominated alongside Daniel Bard (Baseball), Alex Morgan (Women’s Soccer), Max Parrot (Snowboarding), Mikaela Shiffrin (Ski) and Alex Smith (American Football) for the “2021 Laureus World Comeback of the Year”.

Momota suffered injuries in a fatal car crash in January of last year. He impressively came back and won the All Japan Badminton Championships.

The Laureus Award is an annual award event that was initiated since 1999 to give appreciation to athletes who excel. It is regarded as the oscars of sports.

Lin Dan was also nominated for the award in 2012. No badminton player has won the award till date.
