HS Prannoy has formally apologized to the Badminton Association of India (BAI) for his public outburst where he called his country India “a joke”, after being served a show-cause notice from the federation.

“It was unfortunate to witness something like this but Prannoy reached out to us and based on his submission, we hope going forward players will reach out to the federation if they have any concern”, BAI secretary general Ajay Singhania told The Hindu.

Earlier this month, Prannoy had criticized BAI for not recommending his name for the Arjuna Award this year. BAI reasoned not to recommend the Commonwealth Games gold medallist because of disciplinary issues.

The 27-year-old player vented his frustration through social media after being ignored twice in two years. His results were arguably better than the others recommended from the field of badminton.

To ease Prannoy’s disappointment, head coach Pullela Gopichand had, on June 3, exercised his right as a Khel Ratna recipient to recommend Prannoy’s name for the Arjuna Award.
