Arisa Higashino and Yuta Watanabe clinched the bronze medal in the mixed doubles event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games today. In doing so, they became the first pair from Japan to ever win a medal in the mixed doubles event at the Olympics.

They defeated Hong Kong’s Tse Ying Suet and Tang Chun Man in a closely fought match that lasted 49 minutes. After taking the first game, Higashino and Watanabe had two match points at 20-18 in the second set, but the Hong Kong pair saved the two match points and another match point at 21-20.

Higashino and Watanabe clutched up on the fourth match point at 22-21 to win the match and take the bronze medal with a final scoreline of 21-17, 23-21.
