Head coach Pullela Gopichand will not be going with PV Sindhu and the rest of the Indian badminton team to Tokyo for the Olympics. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has allocated only five support staffs to the badminton team due to strict Covid-19 protocols.

Badminton Association of India (BAI) General Secretary Ajay Singhania said, “With just one quota available, Gopichand decided to opt out in order to accommodate Santoso, who has been training with Sai (Praneeth) since the pandemic.”

The Indian team for Tokyo consists of nine members – Agus Dwi Santoso, Park Tae Sang, Mathias Boe, Sai Praneeth B., PV Sindhu, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty and two physios.
