Rio Olympics silver medallists Goh Liu Ying and Chan Peng Soon will be shifting their training base to the BAM (Badminton Association of Malaysia) training centre in preparations for the Olympics.

Dato’ Sri Norza Zakaria, President of BAM, on 10 May, invited independent players Goh Liu Ying, Chan Peng Soon and Soniia Cheah who have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics to train at the national centre.

All three players had earlier declined the invitation from BAM.

Soniia Cheah had said, “By training outside, I get to keep my options open, so I declined the invitation to train in ABM(Akademi Badminton Malaysia, the national training centre). I’d rather stick to my own plans

“Plus, my parents were not keen on me being based there after the recent outbreak in the centre. They’re worried.”

But the recent surge in Covid-19 cases in Malaysia has forced Goh and Chan to reconsider their decisions.

Chan Peng Soon said, “Goh Liu Ying also agreed, because there is no other choice. We need to join the BAM (training camp) to prepare for the Olympics. There is no other way.”

Chan, who is a father of 4 children, added, “As the head of a family, this is not an easy decision, but I have been forced to do it for the Olympics.

They will be joining the BAM training centre later this week. Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying will be appearing in their third Olympics in Tokyo.
